Many systems and models have become so complex that the Artificial Intelligence is referred to as black box. We must understand what goes on inside the algorithm.
Interpretable machine learning provides techniques to better understand and validate how machine learning models work.
The trend of interest over the past five years has been increasing steadily, with most searches from Asian countries and Netherlands. Understanding the models is relevant for the data scientists and ML engineers who build the models and the users of the algorithms who expect explanations for why certain decisions are made.
Transparency and interpretability are currently seen as having a trade-off with model accuracy.
Usually, when building models from data, a trade-off can be observed. We have simple linear models that can be easily interpreted by humans but might not lead to superb predictions for complex problems.
Or we build highly non-linear models that provide better performance on most tasks but are too complex for humans to understand. Neural networks, for instance, often have millions of parameters that simply exceed human capabilities.

- Black box approaches mean we don’t know anything about the model. We only use the relationship between inputs and outputs.
- White box approaches show access to the model internals. The field of Approachable AI entails the whole psychology area about what makes good explanations and which explanations types are the best for humans.

Categorization in xAI
The different types of methods can be distinguished according to a few properties. First of all, we can differentiate between model agnostic and model-specific Approachable AI methods.
- Model-agnostic: the Approachable AI algorithm can be applied to any model — random forest, neural network, support vector machine.
- Model-specific: the method was designed for a specific type of machine learning model. For example, it is only for neural networks regarding the scope of the provided explanations. We can categorize the methods into global and local approaches. This refers to either aiming to explain the whole model or just parts to explain individual predictions.
To explain this a little bit further, we can recall that the decision boundary of a complex model can be highly non-linear. For instance, here, we have a classification problem, and only this complex function on the left can separate the two classes. Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to explain the global model, and instead, many approaches zoom into a local area. Then they present the individual predictions made at that decision boundary. Besides agnosticism and the scope of a method, we can further differentiate according to the data type a technique can handle. Not all explainability algorithms can work with all data types.
